The technological areas covered by the GMM - microelectronics, precision engineering, microsystems and nanotechnology - increasingly overlap and complement one another and are mutually dependent in a wide variety of applications. Precision engineers, for instance, use elements of mechanical, optical and electrical engineering to find solutions. The rapid development of microelectronics and the ability to produce and integrate micromechanical and micro-optic components is leading to the growing merger of microelectronics, precision engineering, micromechanics, microsystems and nanotechnology.

The GMM is backed jointly by the VDE and the VDI. It was founded in 1996 when its two predecessors - the GMF (1965) and the GME (1987) - were consolidated into a single organization. The GMM is organized into 10 specialist divisions, and currently has 9,200 members.

GMM aims:

• Ensure innovation in microelectronics, microsystem engineering and nanotechnology
• Promote the further development of the technologies used in integrated circuits and design systems
• Develop interdisciplinary ideas
• Improve the know-how transfer between research and industry
• Help generate new ideas for the spectrum of applications for microelectronics, micro and precision engineering, and nanotechnology.

• Analysis of the effects of microelectronics and microtechnology on engineering and the economy
• Provide regular information through the specialist publication F&M and others
