The VDE Testing and Certification Institute and the Physikalisch-Technische Bundestanstalt (PTB) have agreed to technical-scientific collaboration in the field of explosion protection (ex protection).
A working area of safety technology, ex protection concerns the avoidance of explosions and the limitation of their impact. Its objective is the prevention of damage or harm to persons, objects, and the environment from technical products, facilities, and equipment. Technical solutions and legal provisions realize explosion protection in specific cases.
The collaboration of VDE and PTB aims to promote testing, research, and development in the field of ex protection. Focus is on the improvement of the services offered to German industry.
In deciding to cooperate with each other, the VDE Institute and the PTB are pursuing the following goals in particular:
- Sharing of experience related to the working basis in the two institutions
- Development of measurement technology procedures in the field of product testing based on the standards group IEC/EN 60079-0 and IEC/EN 80079-34.
- Evolvement of known measurement technology procedures in the field of explosion protection
- Joint conduct of inspections and testing in the field of explosion protection
The two institutes will be working together closely to take on these tasks as a joint effort. Associates from the VDE Institute will work directly at the PTB in Brunswick and join their colleagues at that site in seeking to achieve the objectives which have been set.
As a consequence of this cooperation, the VDE Institute will be able to extend its range of services to include ex protection. Whenever requested by customers, the institute will be able to offer ex protection tests as well as electrical testing.
The PTB in Brunswick is the national metrology institute and performs scientific-technological services. In accordance with its charter, it conducts research and development work and conformity assessment services in the area of explosion protection as well as other activities.
