Solar energy has seen an enormous boom. At least one million solar thermal systems and photovoltaic systems are already installed on German roofs. But the safety technological requirements for equipment and components for photovoltaic systems is steadily increasing.

German manufacturers are globally in a leading position when it comes to the development and construction of photovoltaic components and installations. The close cooperation of the VDE with well-known manufacturers has contributed to this development.
When it comes to photovoltaic systems, which fulfil international standards and testing requirements, the consumer can rely on the fact that the complete installation as well as each component is safe and legally sound. Since photovoltaic installations are subject to extreme weather conditions tough environmental tests are obligatory.

Product testing and certification of photovoltaic components and systems

The VDE Institute is accredited by the Central Body of the Laender for Safety (ZLS) for the awarding of the VDE-GS mark for photovoltaic components and systems.
The product tests cover:

Product safety

• Safety test according to VDE and IEC standards
• PV-Modules: aptitude test for

  crystalline modules according to IEC/EN 61215 and thin-film modules according to
  IEC/EN 61646 , the insulation and the mounting information inverter: all safety requirements according to DIN EN 50 178 are tested, the self-activating switch as well as the electromagnetic compatibility including the noise feedback.
  Installation / mounting system: is the PV module sold together with a mounting system, the construction, weather and corrosion resistance, durability, statics, potential equalization and lightning protection as well as the documentation for the professional installation will be tested and evaluated.

Environmental tests

• Simulation of snow and wind load, hail, heat, low temperatures and moisture as well as corrosion in fast motion procedures at the VDE labs.
