The Information Technology Society deals with all aspects of information technology in industry, administration, teaching, research and science. Its primary aim is to promote the scientific and technical development of information technology and its practical application.
The ITG was founded in 1954, making it the oldest of the VDE societies. Today it has around 11,000 members. The ITG is organized thematically into nine specialist divisions. These divisions have committees and the committees, in turn, are divided into specialist groups. Over 1,200 experts are appointed by the ITG Board to work in the committees.
ITG aims:
- Promote information and communications technology research
- Foster and support upcoming generations of ICT specialists
- Generate new ideas for the information society
- Coordinate ICT developments on an international level
- Serve as an interface between ITG members and society, industry, politics, the media and other groups.
ITG activities:
- Exchange and evaluate scientific findings, information, etc.
- Organize discussions, workshops, seminars and conventions to debate the latest developments in ICT
- Publish position papers, technical journals, conference reports, brochures, periodicals, etc.
- Collaborate with national and international IT associations
- Participate in IT research projects
- Provide terminology for IT standardization and norms
- Influence and advise on education and training themes
- Present prizes and awards honoring the outstanding academic achievements of new generations of ICT engineers and scientists
The ITG Board
Seated in Frankfurt am Main, the ITG Board is normally comprised of nine members, three each from universities, industry, and the public sector/service providers. The Board supervises and controls the work of the ITG Executive. The individual Board members are responsible for themes such as European and national cooperation, public relations, technology trends and education, conferences and networking. The Board is assisted by a scientific advisory council.

International collaboration
The ITG works closely with a wide range of organizations throughout the world that are involved with information and communication technology. Delegates and advisors representing the specialist committees serve as ambassadors to the relevant organizations. The ITG works closely with:
